Paradis: Epilogue

Scene 1

(We see Lucifer sitting in his office, writing.  His computer has been packed up.  He uses a quill pen and an ink well to write.)

Lucifer: (Voice Over.  Corresponding images occur. ) I’m surprised by how long man has managed to survive in this world.  Really though, I always knew that it would end by entropy.  Perhaps it’s better that way.  The world doesn’t end completely and the animals and vegetation can continue to survive and thrive.

I wish others shared my sentiment though.  We’ve seen so many deaths over the last couple of decades.  Most of them have been suicides.  The lack of souls down here in Hell (for they have been gone for some 100 years) seems to utterly disheartened many of the Fallen.  I can understand their feelings, it means that soon we’ll be judged and some of us won’t exist.  It’s a scary thought.

(End voice over.  Lucifer’s phone, the only thing left in his office, rings.  Lucifer answers it.)

Lucifer:  Hullo, Lucifer Morningstar speaking.  What’s up?

Metatron: (annoyed.)  You just enjoy irritating me, don’t you?

Lucifer:  Indeed so.  Checking in to see how we’re doing?

Metatron:  Actually, I’ve been told that the last human has just ceased to exist and has cleared the gates.

Lucifer: (Takes a beat.  Flatly.)  Oh.

Metatron:  Yes, it’s that time, Lux.  You can just teleport everyone to the gates.

Lucifer:  (Nods slowly.)  Yeah, of course.  Um, what do we do when we get there?

Metatron: Hang on.

(Metatron turns around and looks at God.  God pauses for a moment.)

God:  If I may?

Metatron: Certainly.  (He hands God the phone.)

God:  Lucifer?

Lucifer:  (Blinks.)  Your…Holiness…

God:  When you arrive at the gate, simply walk in.  If you cease to exist, you won’t appear within the gate.  If you pass, well…

Lucifer: (Nods.)  Yes.  I’ll see you soon, hopefully.

God:  Indeed so.

Lucifer:  (Quietly.)  Adonai?

God:  Yes, Lucifer?

Lucifer:  Thank you for everything.

God:  (Smiles slightly.)  You’re welcome.

(Lucifer hangs up his phone.  He returns to his letter.)

Lucifer:  (Writing.)  So here comes the final moment of judgment.  It’s an old deal Adonai and I made when I first agreed to oversee Hell.  When the last human died of entropy, all of the fallen were to be judged.  If we had done enough good deeds while we were exiled, we would be allowed to return home.  If not, we would simply cease to exist.  It seemed like a fair deal at the time, but now I’m afraid that I won’t survive.

To whoever finds this, know that I always acted with the best of intentions.  I may not have always done the right thing, but I tried my hardest.

-Lucifer DeVille Morningstar

(He puts the quill in the ink well and sighs.  He stares at the letter and leaves it on his desk.  He exits the office.  Sariel stands outside the office and looks at Lucifer.)

Sariel:  Well…?

(Lucifer offers her a forced smile.  Sariel pauses for a moment and takes Lucifer’s hand.  She hugs him tightly and then lets go.)

Sariel:  Lucifer, it’s been an honour to know you.

Lucifer:  I’ll see you on the other side of the gates Sariel.

(Sariel pauses and adverts her gaze.)

Lucifer:  Sariel, don’t give me that.  You’ll make it, I assure you.

Sariel:  I hope you’re right.  (She smiles.)  Heh.  This is kinda like on the eve of the Lucifian War, innit?

Lucifer:  (Nods.)  Yeah, it is.  Before the first battle and…

(They fall into silence and exchange uneasy glances.)

Lucifer:  Start teleporting everyone to the gate.  I’ll stay and make sure that everyone is gone before I join you.  I want to be the last one to leave this place.  It’s only fair.

Sariel: (smiles.) As you wish, sir.

(Sariel walks off.  Lucifer sighs heavily.)

Scene 2
(Heaven.  God sits on Metatron’s desk.)

Metatron: So, how many of them will make it?

God: The majority of those who knew they wouldn’t make it are already deceased.  Most of those coming in now will pass through the gates.

Metatron: But some won’t?

God:  Unfortunately not.    (It sighs.)  I feel terrible for doing it but…

Metatron:  I understand.  So, are we going to greet them or…?

God:  I will.  You stay here and hold down the proverbial fort.

Metatron:  All right.

(God exits.  Metatron sighs.)

Scene 3
(Lucifer stands outside of Hell.  He locks the gate with a long key and sighs, looking upwards.)

Lucifer:  I’ve dreamed of this day for ages.  I don’t believe it’s finally come…

(Lucifer sighs heavily and turns around.  He teleports off.)

Scene 4
(Lucifer arrives outside of Heaven’s gates.  Heaven’s gates are simple looking wrought iron gates.  He stands in front of a massive body of angels.  Sariel and Damnit walk over to him.)

Sariel:  We’ve confirmed that everyone’s here.

Damnit:  You gonna say anything before we go in or…?

Lucifer:  Should I?

Sariel:  Perhaps.

(Lucifer shoots up into the sky in a column of fire.  Everyone looks up.  The flames die away.)

Lucifer:  I felt I should say something before we all enter.  (He smiles.)  It’s been a joy to know all of you, and I thank you dearly for sticking beside me through thick and thin.  Godspeed, all of you.

(Lucifer flies down and lands in front of the gate.  Sariel walks over to him.)

Sariel:  Well stated.  You’re going to go in first.

Lucifer:  (Nods.)  It only feels right…(He gulps.)

Sariel:  No regrets?

Lucifer:  Plenty, but I can’t dwell on them.  I’ll see you inside.

(He and Sariel hug tightly.)

Sariel: Hey, Lux?

Lucifer: Yes?

Sariel:  You’re gonna make it, I promise you.

Lucifer:  (Smiles.)   I hope so.  Now, could you please let go so I can open up the gate?

(Sariel nods and lets go.  Lucifer turns around for a moment and looks at all the people behind him.  He then opens up the gates and walks in.  We see him enter a bright flash of light.)

Fin.
Fin of Paradis series.
